Asahi Tengustone

Asahi Tenguston

Asahi Tenguston is a ski resort located in Asahi Cho, Hamada City. It is 8km from Mizuho interchange but it may be easier, and cheaper, to take the ordinary roads. It takes about 40 minutes by car from the center of Hamada. There are lots of special offers such as ladies’ day, men’s day, kids go free day, and lift discounts for Hamada residents, so have someone who can read Japanese check out their website before you plan your trip. There are also season passes, family plans, and special deals for 19- and 20-year-olds. Their website also has some cool videos which will show you what the skiing conditions are like. Recently they have been offering free one-hour lessons for beginners, starting with how to put your skis on and take them off, and how to balance and, very importantly, how to stop. After a one-hour lesson, most people are ready to try the beginners’ slopes. You can also book a longer lesson for a fee: it will be taught in Japanese.  During our visit in February 2013, the staff were so kind and helpful.

A shuttle bus runs from the car park to the rental store, and the gondolas. You can buy your lift pass here and snacks, drinks, and some small gear like hats, and gloves, and masks.  Renting equipment: you can rent everything you need but the forms are entirely in Japanese. Most of it is katakana so a little knowledge goes a long way. However, from a safety point of view, if you don’t speak any Japanese at all, it is wise to go skiing when you can’t understand instructions and safety announcements?

There is a great view from the gondolas on your way up and even better from the top of the slopes. There are three cafeterias, where from about 1000 yen you can have a tasty lunch. Buy your ticket at the vending machine. Best to have a Japanese reader with you for the vending machine, but as you know, any time you are stuck in Shimane, someone will always do their best to help you out with a language problem.
